Heroku

Heroku runs applications in managed containers called dynos. It is a fit for teams that want deployment workflows and managed services rather than a server operating system to administer.

About Heroku

Products and scope

Application dynos, managed PostgreSQL, key-value services and add-ons. Cedar and Fir are distinct runtime foundations; check which supports the features your application needs. Heroku scales applications through dynos rather than giving you a root-access machine to configure. Web processes, workers and managed data services are separate pieces of the deployment. That is useful when an application already follows a process-based deployment model, but it changes what a monthly dyno figure represents. A web dyno price does not cover a database, a second worker or every add-on. Eco’s sleep behavior is also a functional difference from an always-on tier, especially for visitor-facing services. Higher dyno tiers add deployment and scaling features as well as resource changes. When estimating a real app, count each process that must remain available and then price its data services. Cedar and Fir are different foundations, so confirm the supported workflow before moving an established deployment between them. Compute multipliers should not be rewritten as invented CPU specifications.

Billing and pricing

Cedar Basic lists US$7 per month with 0.5 GB RAM; Standard-1X lists US$25 with 0.5 GB RAM. These are dyno prices, not a complete application budget. Database and other services add costs.

Regions and availability

Runtime and private-space choices affect which regions and deployment options you have.

Support

Heroku has a Help Center. The support you get depends on your plan.

Before you buy

Eco dynos sleep after inactivity, while Basic dynos are always on. Heroku’s compute multipliers are not vCPU counts.

Counts describe the records published on HostCritiq, not every offer Heroku sells. Prices can differ by billing term, region, currency and tax. Open a plan for its full terms.
