Application hosting

Hosting SilverBullet

A self-hosted notes workspace that keeps its data in a mapped folder. Its file-oriented storage makes persistence and folder access important parts of the hosting arrangement.

Understand the setup

Check runtime, storage and installation requirements before choosing a server.

Must have

Installation requirements

  • A Docker environment and supported image architecture.
  • A persistent folder or volume mapped to /data with appropriate permissions.

Planning guidance

Use the resource planner to size a server for your workload.

No official hardware minimum for SilverBullet

Notes, attachments and enabled runtime features determine storage and processing needs. The installation instructions do not establish a fixed number of notes that any server can handle.

Deploy with

Supported paths

  • Docker Compose
  • Docker container

The host must provide

Runtime

Container architecture
64-bit Intel, 64-bit ARM and 32-bit ARMv7 images are documented
Browser runtime
Default image includes Chromium; slim variants omit it

Storage

Persistent data

Keep the /data folder persistent and back it up before changing image versions. Decide whether the default image or a slim variant provides the runtime features the workspace needs.

Step by step

Plan a SilverBullet deployment

  1. Choose a release

Use a published release for a maintained deployment; edge follows ongoing development. Select the image variant for the features you need.

  2. Map the workspace

Mount a persistent folder into /data and check ownership before starting the service.

  3. Plan access and updates

Configure the intended access controls and HTTPS arrangement, then preserve the data folder when replacing containers.

Security

Before you go public

  • Restrict access to private notes and the runtime features.
  • Review image configuration before exposing the service outside a trusted network.

Cost

Beyond the server price

  • Include note attachments and recovery copies in disk capacity.
  • The full browser-enabled image has different requirements from a slim deployment.
