Application hosting

Hosting Prometheus

A monitoring server that collects time-series metrics and evaluates queries and alerting rules. Its hosting requirements depend on the number of active series, collection rate and retained history.

Understand the setup

Check runtime, storage and installation requirements before choosing a server.

Must have

Installation requirements

  • A compatible published binary or container runtime.
  • A configuration file defining scrape targets.
  • Persistent local storage for retained metrics.

Recommended

Planning guidance

Use the resource planner to size a server for your workload.

No official hardware minimum for Prometheus

Server memory changes with active series and query load. Retention and ingestion rate determine disk growth; measure these on the intended workload before choosing a larger instance.

Deploy with

Supported paths

  • Precompiled binary
  • Official Docker image

The host must provide

Runtime

Metrics targets
Exporters or applications with compatible metrics endpoints

Storage

Persistent data

Keep the time-series database on a suitable local filesystem. Network filesystems such as NFS are not supported for local storage. Retention limits need headroom for the write-ahead log and compaction.

Step by step

Plan a Prometheus deployment

  1. Define collection

List targets and scrape intervals, then check the configuration before starting the server.

  2. Persist metrics

Attach persistent storage to the container or configure a durable data directory for a binary installation.

  3. Set retention

Choose time or size retention and reserve extra disk space for incoming data and compaction.

Security

Before you go public

  • Keep metrics endpoints and the administration interface on an appropriate private network.
  • Protect credentials used to scrape services and configure access controls where needed.

Cost

Beyond the server price

  • Budget monitoring storage separately from the applications being monitored.
  • Remote storage and external alert delivery can add services to the budget.
